I usually run late. In most things. Probably everything, actually. Which is why, here I am, almost 2 months late in reminiscing about my adventures in the various lands of red double decked buses; leaning towers and pasta; mountains and crazily expensive watches; eating snails and inverted glass pyramids; chocolate and waffles; and finally, clogs, windmills and cheese factories (ew)…
By the way, it’s going to be a very very long post, just warning you now.
Anyways..where did it all begin? Tbh, not sure I remember ( <*)))< goldfish me)…ah right, yep. It started in Hong Kong (we went with an Asian tour ^^), met up with our tour leader guy by the name of Kelvin (such an asian name…) and checked into our British Airways flight on a brand-spanking-new A380 (which according to the pilot, was only a few weeks old and subsequently made my very, very, safe dad, nervous as crazy cats)
Now this whole time, I was wondering..is this going to be another boring tour with nobody my age? (like last time I went to Malaysia & Singapore, totally filled with old couples..so awkward) so when i saw another family of three say hi to Kelvin, I was like oooh that kid looks younger than the average retirement age 😀 and 13 hours later, landing in heathrow airport at about 5am, the two sets of parents introduced each other in a totally non-awkward way. It was like Hey!..Hey?…How are you?…I’m good..you?…Good, where you guys from?…Australia, you?…Oh, us too! Our son just graduated…Oh, our daughter too!…I’m Michael…~handshake~…I’m Erwin, nice to meet you…I’m Evelyn …~handshake~ … I’m Connie…And this is our son Brian, and you are?…I’m Jolie…hi…hi..and there we are, all friends, standing facing each other in a beautiful awkward silence…
Anyways, moving on…hop on the bus (we’re allocated rows, like it’s primary school or something ) and Brian’s family is in front of us, we’re right behind, followed by various couples of varying ages — it’s a 50 seater bus and the tour is only 22, so plenty of space, yet we’re all crammed to the front initially..so off we go. First stop, Buckingham Palace! It’s freezing cold, bright and early and gloomy as hell, and I was extremely disappointed that there weren’t any of the funny guards in the red coat and furry black hats 😥
Buckingham Palace – no funny red guards, just random joggers and fellow asian tour peeps 😥
Then we went off to the typical other attractions: Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, British Museum, etc. Also noticed a few little oddities, like the english pedestrian crossing button clicker thing? so different from home…theirs takes up so much more unnecessary space! And then in the souvenir store (aside from the very very brightly dressed man advertising out front and dancing to some horrid dubstep music) they also had a range of certain novelty items and one thing (1D fans will get the pun) stood out in particular.. 😀
Westminster (surprisingly tall…)
Big Ben! …i think I’m talking when dad took the photo..
Turns out, it had just been newly repainted a few days before, go go bright blue paint!
BM. (actually you can see Brian’s mum in the background there, short little thing 😀 )
Poor guy…not the best dancer…and his makeup freaked me out a bit…. O_O
Oh the British sense of humour ^^ brilliant
Oh and we also flew 13 hours from HK to europe, just to have Chinese food for lunch in london’s chinatown…tell me where is the logic…
Anyways, that was all on the first day. That night, got on a 3hr flight to my beloved Italy and checked into a hotel that was called “The Hotel”. Simplicity is best I guess…Next day, very early wake up call and we’re off to the Colosseum!!!!! And then also the Trevi fountain!! The idyllic side of me made me throw a euro and make a wish, but then my cynical side took a certain smugness in that it didn’t come true…then we also went to the Vatican where there was a huge crowd lining up and lots of shoving and pushing to get in.. in particular two european women were very rudely shoving through our tour (which is made up of some elderly people too) to get ahead so i was like oh no you didn’t and decided to shove right back and ‘accidentally’ stomped on her foot…let it not be said that I am not petty ^^
In my head, gladiators are still racing around in chariots yelling battle cries…..jks, i’m not that crazy..
Throw a euro, make a wish. Sounds like song lyrics. Oh, and there’s Brian 😀
italian gelato….so colourful!
The Vatican..you can see all four parents there..my mum, his mum, his dad, my dad…they were like bffs…
Next day we’re in Pisa. Now everyone goes there and either pretends to push the tower over or pretend to hold it back up. I really wanted to go there and try to kick it down. But alas, my height (or lack of) and skinny jeans meant it was not to be 😥 so I just ended up selfying (i took a lot of selfies on this trip..) and poking the tower instead.
Some random lady making a spectacular photobomb
Selfying with the tower – and Brian photobombing -.-
Then we’re in Verona!! Home of Romeo & Juliet ^^ actually did go and see her supposed balcony (did Romeo throw rocks to get her attention?) and there’s also a statue of her down there where if you touch it (imagine how gross that statue would be, everyone touching it everyday) you’ll get good fortune in your love life or something, but then so many people have decided to touch a certain place, it broke..there is literally a hole.
Romeo, Romeo, wherefore thou art Romeo? 😀
Statue with a hole and some Japanese tourist hugging it….
Next day we’re off to Venice!! City of water? Canals? Water canals? Something. We walk around St Marco’s (is that the guy from the game?) famous square, saw some gondolas, saw some famous bridge, split up and we went to an apparently 300 year old cafe for coffee and macarons, looked at novelty aprons, and lunch was ~wait for it~.. squid ink spaghetti.. it was horrifying..and there was a lot…and it was black….and it tasted funny….it was not fun.
Marco’s square..wonder if they played Marco Polo here.. anyways, there’s our two fams 🙂
Some gondola which we didn’t actually go on
300 year old cafe’s napkin design 😀
Buying some novelty aprons 😉
Next day we’re in switzerland!!! First time I saw snow (like real live snow!..uh, not live, but you know what i mean), first time it snowed on me, saw my first snowflake, many firsts 😀 Got up to Mt Titlis and oh jeez it was cold…my toes and my nose (lol, lyrics of Bubbly haha)…and when Kelvin tricked us to go out onto the cliff walk, we thought it’d loop around but it was a dead end so we had to walk back the whole length again…and it was really high up so oxygen levels were lower and it was bloody -20 degrees brrrrrr so of course get back inside the building and 4 degrees feels positively toasty warm! then while everyone had hot chocolate, to warm myself up I decided to eat movenpick ❤ swiss ice cream on a swiss mountain ^^
At the base of the mountain..first snow!!
MY FIRST SNOWFLAKE!!! 😮
It’s cold outside ^^
obligatory selfie in the snow 😀
Cliff walk….evil trick!
warming up with hot chocolate
warming up with Movenpick ❤
Brian’s mum…clearly doesn’t do cold well..
Then we were off to Luzern, where we saw the stone lion and also a very amusing golden lion.. 😀 and also a really really expensive diamond, sapphire and ruby encrusted rolex!! 😮
Stone lion ^^
Major design screw up for this one 😀
Wonder what would’ve happened if i did a smash and grab there…. 😀
Next we were off to France – Dijon first (where they tried to make me eat snails..escargot is a big no-no for me despite a few certain friends insisting it’s delicious), then two days in Paris, city of luuurve… saw the Sacre de Coeur, Eiffel tower at night, la (or is it le?) Seine night time river cruise, Versailles, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel tower during the day, the Luxor obelisk, the Lourve (where i loved the egyptian bits and zoned off for the mona lisa and the rest..), etc – oh and i also saw a few more little random things like oddly shaped mannequins and random posters too..
hehehe dem mannequins 😀
very odd poster..
if you look closely, it says “where is my cheese?”……i don’t know where your cheese is..why eat cheese anyway ^^
Sacre de coeur 🙂
La Seine – with the eiffel tower and brian ^^
Versailles….not sure what my hair is doing..
Arc de triomphe!
French friends..is it le or la tour de eiffel?
Paris obelisk!! And some wheel wannabe..
Some famous statues 😀
The real arc that Napoleon Bonaparte saw
A certain someone -.- snuck a photo of me falling asleep as the tour guide rambled on and on about buddhist symbols or something..idk
Then next day, i actually could’ve checked into three different countries on Fb if i had had wifi..we went from Paris (France) to spending a few hours in Brussels (Belgium) and ended up at Amsterdam (Holland/Netherlands) for the end of the day. While in Brussels…saw the famous peeing statue (some story about a kid seeing a stick of dynamite about to blow and without any water nearby just peed on it to put it out and became a hero =.=), had some belgium chocolate covered strawberries <3, tried a waffle, etc
another lunch at a chinese restaurant in Brussels….ps. notice the feather duster?
LOTS of chocolate..
Even the waffle store has the famous statue of that kid outside…
Apparently this is here for drunk guys to stop them using the general streets as the toilet..eugh..
awesome photobomb by some random in a street in Brussels 😀
huge clogs in the hotel lobby of Amsterdam ><
Final day…(so sad 😦 )…had a bright and early breakfast at 5am…then went off to zaanse schans, the famous place of windmills that we associate Amsterdam with – then went to a cheese factory (i stepped in there for less than a minute and leapt out due to avoid asphyxiation because that smell..eww it reeked…and i got outside expecting a huge breath of fresh air but even the air outside was infected with cheesiness don’t get me started on how hard it was to get the smell out of my nose, had to find such unconventional things to smell 😀 then we went to the clog factory where they sold everything wood (including wooden tulips which i had my eye on the last purple one and this other …’lovely lady’ (we nicknamed her grumpy)…skipped the line and
stole it from me got it first..this is what i get for playing by the rules..) anyway..then we went off on a boat cruise and ended up at the diamond factory..so sparkly 😀
it’s all quite picturesque
zaanse schans with Brian
Hahah they look after their ducks and geese seriously..
My 60 seconds spent inside that nightmarish place..
even my scarf smelled like cheese after… 😥
What is it with people and cheese?!? Really…cheese clogs? =.=
Amsterdam..home of Heineken beer!…not that I know anything about that..~innocent look~
Boat cruise with daddy 😀
Selfie at the diamond factory…things got awkward when the lady turned everybody’s attention on me and asked “has he bought you a diamond yet?”…um…awkward much..:D
After that, we had lunch, very ordinary, then we’re at the airport, about to fly back the Heathrow…and lo and behold in the corner of my eye i notice inside a souvenir store….my purple tulips!!!! YES suck that, grumpy! Even better, turns out there is justice in the world because as karma would have it, she was the last to check in her baggage and she was 3kgs over and wasn’t allowed in…shouldn’t have gotten those tulips then ~smirk~ …i was told i had a very smug face while watching her scrambling to unpack and take stuff out…oh well! 😀
i got my tulips in the end..victory! 😀
Anyways got back to heathrow, wasted an hour or so, and hopped on a 13 hr plane trip back to HK, where it began 🙂 Of course, I can’t last 13 hours of boredom by myself, even with in flight entertainment, so we ended up sitting together and watching monsters inc 😀
monsters inc-ing together 😀
And that was it! Arrived in HK, said bye to our friends and that was the end of our fabulous, amazing, spectacular time in Europe 🙂
ps, if you’ve actually read to the end of this, my apologies once again..i talk a lot.
